Epic poem by Virgil, written in Latin in 12
books of hexameters and composed during the
last 11 years of his life (30-19 BC). It
celebrates the development of the Roman
Empire through the legend of Aeneas. After
the fall of Troy, Aeneas wanders for seven
years and becomes shipwrecked off Africa. He
is received by Dido, queen of Carthage, and
they fall in love. Aeneas, however,
renounces their love and sails on to Italy
where he settles as founder of Latium and the
Roman state.
